Now We Know – Internet Explorer has stopped working – Again!
My Internet Explorer crashed all the time. I mean crashed a lot. I could not explain it (or fix it)and since it had been doing it since right after the fresh OS install I was very frustrated. Performance was poor and the messages were driving me crazy. Does this happen to you? Do you happen to use Skype?
My original article for tuning up Internet Explorer can be found at:
http://usingwindowshomeserver.com/2009/11/25/now-we-know-internet-explorer-self-help/
So, this morning Windows 7 finally gave me the answer. It had never specified Skype was an issue before today. This is just the add-on of course and not the Skype program.
24 times? Yeah, time to disable it. I would have never thought this was the issue and I do not know why Windows 7 did not tell me before. I have had this OS since October 22!
Disable the Skype Add-on
Tools>Manage Add-ons:
All fixie. No crashes all day. If you use the Skype Add-on then you might want to leave it alone but I do not want it! Again, this is the just the Add-on and not the Skype application.
Check it out for yourself and fix your Internet Explorer!

Tim, you are a GENIUS. I hadn’t connected my recent spate of crashes with installing Skype. Now the problem is all gone.
I am also having the same problem for a while now and I am not having skype and I can certainly tell you that it is quite annoying.
Are there other strange Add-ons in your Explorer? One of them may be causing it. Try disabling one at a time.
Tim
Tim – thanks so much for this tip. I’ve been tearing my hair out. I’ve just bought a new computer with Windows 7 and Skype and Internet Explorer have been erratic since day one. Am hoping the fix works for me – bizarrely when Skype goes down on my windows 7 machine, it also goes sometimes goes down on my other laptop running XP and even stops working on my iPpod touch. Cheers. Rob
OK, I hope your tip will help – I’ve been getting constant “SKYPE has stopped working” error messages after (almost) every “wake up” in Vista Home Premium. I’m not an IE user(Firefox for me), but felt there could be a link.
Went to IE (7.0.6002) and disabled both the “SKYPE” and “SKYPE add-on for Internet Explorer” entries.
I will now monitor SKYPE stability and see if this helps (and report back here in a week).
BTW, I had over 50 reports of this in Windows Problem History and decided to uninstall (up-to-date version) and re-install, but SKYPE just kept crashing.
I’m back with bad news, SKYPE still crashes when Windows “wakes up”. I also checked to see if Firefox had any SKYPE related “add-ins”, but no. So it’s back to looking for a different cause….

Have you tried removing Flash and Shockwave to see if that is the cause?
I have had that in the past as well and then had to reinstall them.
