Backing Up a Mac with an HP MediaSmart EX470 or EX475

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article called Backing Up a Mac with an HP MediaSmart EX485 or EX487. The article explained how to back up a Mac using Time Machine to your HP MediaSmart EX485 or EX487. This was possible due to some added software that HP included with the new MediaSmart Servers.

Now for all those people who don’t yet have either the EX485 or the EX487, but still have either the EX470 or EX475, MediaSmartHome.com has a detailed article on how to do pretty much the same thing using SMB Shares.

    Hi Andrew,
    Great site! It’s great seeing all these Windows Home Server resources. I have basically stuck with WeGotServed since I started using a home server, but I will definetly put you on my blogroll.

    Now that I have sucessfully backed up my Mac to the EX485, I want to run a backup 11 days later (the Mac told me I had not backed up for 11 days). However I cannot find a reference to my server in the Time Machine preferences dialog box. I have logged into the server before opening Time Machine, but the search for Apple backup drives produces nothing.
    Any suggestions?

      Alan, the backup to WHS using Time Machine is automatic as long as your Mac and WHS are switched on and connected to the network. If you leave you Mac on it should use TM to backup.

    Just FYI,
    I had problems with the HP prefs acting strangely and not letting me configure the backup share until I realized I had the mac firewall turned on.

    On leopard, go to your settings app and select “security”, then “Firewall”. select the third option (”Set access for specific services and applications”). Then hit the + symbol at the bottom and add the HP Mediasmart Server Control Center app.

    Then quit and restart the mediasmart control panel and it should all work.
